TmaxSoft Beats Out Oracle in South Korea’s WETAX Payment System Overhaul

Chicago, IL – September 7, 2021

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Republic of Korea, chose Tibero as its Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) in their efforts to update WETAX, their local government online tax payment system. WETAX is used by nearly 8 million people and by about 20,000 local government tax officials. The project is worth 10 billion won, including solutions and construction, and is one of the largest RDBMS public projects in the world.

Eight companies participated in the ordering competition, and Daeshin Information Systems, which proposed Tibero, was selected by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety as the preferred bidder. Among those operators who were not chosen, was one who proposed Oracle. The Daeshin and Tibero team was picked, in part, because it earned the highest technology score of the competitors.

Since it was established in 2005, South Korea has continually upgraded their WETAX system to reflect policy changes and public demands, but the system had reached its limits due to system aging and structural problems. The government had spent 22% of the RDBMS construction cost for maintenance every year but continued to be mired in problems. Frequent system failures, especially on payment deadline days, made the system particularly frustrating for users. South Korea also recognized the need to prepare for the local tax environment of the future, such as the spread of high-quality services using advanced information technology.

Furthermore, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Republic of Korea, needed to strengthen the local taxation capacity of each of their 234 local governments to support their policy of decentralization.

When looking for a new RDBMS, South Korea required a high-performance and multiplexed (triple, redundant Active-Active Cluster DB) cluster RDBMS that could integrate and process large-scale data while sorting users by new project, and could handle batch and online simultaneously. The system needed to be able to collect as-is data (about 20TB worth) from each local government in collaboration with the main business operator. Tibero met their requirements, and more.

A high-performance RDBMS, Tibero provides an environment in which integrated and operated data can be viewed, processed, and used with authority for each local government. It not only has the necessary features but will reduce the total cost of ownership for WETAX by about 50%.

Work is set to begin immediately and to be completed in early 2023.

TMAXSOFT ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH MICROSOFT AZURE

Partnership offers customers the most complete mainframe migration solution on the market

Chicago, IL – March 15, 2021

TmaxSoft, a global software innovator that delivers mainframe modernization solutions with OpenFrame, announced their partnership with Microsoft Azure to deploy OpenFrame on Azure. OpenFrame is a solution that enables mainframe applications, resources, and data to be migrated to a high-performance open system, such as the cloud, with no changes to the underlying business logic. Azure is a cloud computing service for building, testing, deploying, and managing applications and services. OpenFrame deployed on Azure provides deployment flexibility and choice based on client mainframe workload requirements.

In a recent benchmark study, OpenFrame on Azure performed better than an IBM Z mainframe and at a much lower cost. When running on Azure, OpenFrame can deliver the equivalent of thousands of MIPS (million instructions per second).

“TmaxSoft OpenFrame is an efficient and reliant way of re-platforming client’s IBM, Fujitsu, or Hitachi mainframe workloads to the Microsoft Azure Cloud. By doing so, enterprises can run mission-critical Assembler, COBOL, and PL/I applications, while benefiting from the reliability and scalability of the cloud,” said Bob Ellsworth, WW Director Mainframe Transformation at Microsoft.

“This partnership with Microsoft Azure is very important for our customers. Deploying OpenFrame on Azure dramatically reduces operating costs while delivering improved agility and flexibility. It enables our customers to more easily modernize their application portfolios to meet their ever-changing business needs,” said Karthik Masilamani, VP of Global Partnerships at TmaxSoft.

OpenFrame modernizes an existing mainframe from a monolithic architecture to a cloud-ready, multi-tier architecture. It supports both containers, as well as virtualized environments for deployment on an open system. OpenFrame supports deployments that require high transactions per second and can scale to over 100,000 MIPS.

Mainframe workloads moved to OpenFrame on Azure provide a low-risk, high-value strategy to support legacy application, process, and infrastructure modernization. Together OpenFrame and Azure provide a well-tested and pre-integrated mainframe migration solution that allows customers to migrate off the mainframe to the cloud in less than 12 months.

TMAX PROVES ITS CLOUD COMPETITIVENESS IN THE COMMERCIAL DBMS AND WAS MARKETS IN KOREA

Tmax successfully supports KERIS’s e-Learning site, an online/distance teaching-learning platform

GYEONGGI-DO, South KoreaMay 28, 2020

  • - Tmax, the only proprietary system software company in Korea, successfully supports the e-Learning site that provides online/distance education for elementary, middle and high school students
  • - In the post-Corona era, the domestic cloud market for system software, such as JEUS and Tibero, is expected to grow with the rising demand for untact education

With the spread of non-face-to-face or untact culture and conducting of online classes for elementary, middle and high schools, Tmax has contributed greatly to facilitate online learning provided by Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS).

Tmax, the only system software company who develops its own original technology in Korea, said that the company has partnered with Naver Business Platform (NBP, CEO Park Won-ki) to ensure stable operation of the e-Learning site by providing: ▲product license expansion ▲24-hour standby system ▲ technical and product support including system monitoring by dedicated engineers from Tmax HQ and Tmax Yeongnam.

With two weeks left until online opening of schools, Tmax and NBP built additional seven e-Learning sites across Seoul, Busan, and Gyeonggi-do to accommodate more students. To allow the estimated 400K-500K students to concurrently access the e-Learning system when schools open online in the second phase, they rebuilt their DBMS and WAS systems into a distributed environment.

Through post data analysis, they predicted about 1.5 million concurrent users to access the system in the third phase. Considering the regional variance in the number of visitors, a total of 12 e-Learning sites were up and running in time for the third phase of online school opening.

During the one month spent on system analysis and expansion, Tmax expanded licenses for JEUS, WebtoB, and Tibero and optimized WAS and database servers to relieve bottlenecks from 650K+ concurrent users and achieve seamless online opening of schools.

During the short time period remaining prior to school opening, Tmax expanded the system with cores and servers that can scale tens of times to prepare for sudden traffic spikes.

The advantages of a domestic company compared to foreign and open source companies have helped to: achieve large-scale core/server expansion in a limited time frame without bottlenecks or failures; provide fast technical support and 24-hour monitoring system; quickly collect and handle technical questions and requests through real-time communication. Leveraging these advantages allowed Tmax to make a significant contribution in removing obstacles to ensure students’ right to education.

KERIS’s Digital Textbook and e-Learning platforms are large-scale educational learning platforms that support educational contents for 4 million elementary, middle and high school students nationwide. The e-Learning sites run on Tmax’s JEUS, WebtoB, and Tibero in NBP's public cloud.

In preparation for the post-Corona era, the Korean government is seeking the Korean version of the New Deal that focuses on digital-based projects. This has caused the untact culture including online opening of schools to spread rapidly. Accordingly, the proliferation of cloud technology and the demand for DBMS and WAS solutions are increasing significantly, and the cloud market with various commercial product offerings is forecast to grow.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19 in schools, the educational authorities are allowing schools to implement a “Blended” learning model mixing conventional and e-learning. Under this model, students will attend school in person every other day or bi-weekly. Now more than ever, it is critical that e-learning and other distance education systems provide seamless and reliable services.

Lee Hyung-bae, CEO of TmaxSoft, said: “We will continue to provide full corporate-level support so that students can continue to learn online through these challenging times of COVID-19.” He added: “We expect that new services and products leveraging Tmax's technology will drive the market as online and untact activities increase and the government pushes for the Korean New Deal.”

TMAXSOFT TO SUPPLY TIBERO DATABASE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE TO HYUNDAI AND KIA

Tibero will be the carmakers’ standard choice of database management system (DBMS) for their enterprise-wide, global business operations

CHICAGO – June 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ - TmaxSoft, a global software innovator that delivers mainframe rehosting, RDBMS and middleware solutions to help enterprises leverage critical data, announced today that its affiliate, TmaxData, officially entered into a memorandum of understanding with Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors to select and adopt its Tibero database solution. Tibero will be the carmakers' standard choice of database management system (DBMS) for their enterprise-wide, global business operations in North America, Europe, China and India, as well as their IT infrastructure at the Korean headquarters.

Both Hyundai and Kia have been using Tibero since 2009 and have rigorously validated both the performance and the financial ROI of Tibero which led to the decision to expand its usage. The carmakers have been using different types of DBMS software from various IT vendors, but plan to standardize on Tibero.

"We concluded that using Tibero, which has a certain stability in terms of performance, will bring a higher return on investment," said Suh Jung-sik, Senior Vice President, ICT Division of Hyundai Motor Group.

"This is a significant milestone for Tibero as an alternative to other industry-leading DBMS solutions in the market. Hyundai's decision to select Tibero is definitely a rare one in Korea where foreign DBMS products, such as Oracle, dominate most of the Korean enterprises," said John Yun, Global President and CEO of TmaxSoft.

In a five-year cost calculation, companies that use Tibero can save at least 47 percent on the total cost of ownership compared to companies that use other DBMS products.

Tibero is the enterprise RDBMS of choice for the virtual data center. Its licensing model allows enterprises to fully maximize their virtualization investment by only licensing the cores associated to a given virtual machine, resulting in drastically lower TCO. Some 900 companies, both in Korea and abroad, use Tibero.

TmaxSoft is a global software innovator focused on data management, middleware and mainframe modernization, with solutions that offer enterprise CIOs viable alternatives to support their global IT powerhouses and drive competitive advantage. TmaxSoft has based its growth on a strong foundation of research and development, along with a sustained commitment to innovation. Today, we work with over 2,000 customers around the world.

Indus joins TmaxSoft’s growing roster of ISVs

Indus set to target UK market as it moves off Oracle to Tibero as its database application of choice

TmaxSoft, a global software innovator focused on cloud, infrastructure, and legacy modernisation, has signed the Indian-based ISV Indus to its growing number of software partners now running their applications on its Oracle-compatible database solution Tibero.

Founded in 1990, Indus offers a specialized suite of products and technology solutions for Banking & Finance, Telecom and Insurance Industries. Indus offers  enterprise level originations, receivables management and debt management solutions which are trusted by over 100 plus clients globally. With more than 10 plus implementations in Europe the company is now setting its sights to expand its presence in the UK market by providing innovative and cost effective solutions. TmaxSoft would be one of the key partners in this strategy for Indus.

Founded in 1997 in South Korea, TmaxSoft has been in the UK market for a number of years and during that time it has been signing up companies in the independent software development sector in the UK as well as existing international software providers with a presence in the UK market. TmaxSoft has long argued that ISVs have a unique opportunity to migrate from expensive and complicated licensing agreements traditionally associated with the likes of Oracle.

TmaxSoft has a portfolio of mission-critical enterprise software, which includes the Tibero relational database management system, a secure, fully-compatible SQL RDBMS that scales easily and conforms to today’s cost optimised cloud architectures.

Prashant Kaikini, Vice President Sales Europe & UK, Indus, stated: “We partner with best of breed technology suppliers to deliver exceptional solutions for the banking, finance, telecoms and risk management markets.  With more and more systems struggling to cope the today’s growing data needs, there is a very real and present need for solutions that address not only performance but efficiency as well.  Every company wants to reduce costs; but to do so without sacrificing the tools to drive their business forward.

“For many organisations, replacing their Oracle database would reduce licensing and maintenance costs. However, many believe that the potential development time, staff training requirements, and ultimately change costs, tie them in to their Oracle database. This doesn’t need to be the case as we are demonstrating through our partnership with TmaxSoft,” he continued.

Carl Davies, CEO of TmaxSoft UK, added: “Tibero is an Oracle-compatible database that gives users the freedom of choice to retain their investment in both people and technology, with the same expected levels of performance and familiar interface. The only differences are the more agreeable costs and flexible licensing terms; without the risk and expense associated with changing to any other vendor or open source.

“Not only does Tibero’s core technology enable high productivity and operate with stability during peak levels of demand, based on a time scale of five years, users can enjoy cost savings of up to 60 per cent compared to other existing commercial DBMSs in the market. With our innovative technology, we are beginning to make a big impact in the UK market and beyond as this new business relationship with Indus proves.”

First developed in 2003, Tibero was designed for large-scale enterprise environments. Through efficient resource utilisation, Tibero ensures optimal performance even when processing large data loads. Tibero active-active clustering technology can be highly scaled out to support increasing workloads and user numbers. By applying shared disk based clustering technology, it provides seamless and reliable services with various tools that enhance the productivity for new solutions development and system operations.
